This charming Madeiran Quinta was built in the 18th century on one of the green hills surrounding the city of Funchal. Over the years it has been the home of well-known French and British families. During the Napoleonic wars, General Beresford, Commander of the British Forces on the island chose it as his residence. The hotel is surrounded by lush gardens with a rich and diverse collection of plants, old trees and colorful, delicate flowers. All the rooms and suites of the hotel face south over the magnificent gardens. In the Beresford Restaurant the magnificent sideboard dating back to the General’s time still adorns the dining room. Madeiran and International cuisine are served in formal, traditional style. Nestled by the tropical swimming pool the Colombo Bistro serves quality food cooked simply with the freshest ingredients in a truly relaxing style. Breakfast is served in the elegant The Jade Room with a verandah and seating in the garden. The hotel proposes a wide range of leisure facilities for guests: heated large freshwater swimming pool, sun terraces with sun beds, well-equipped gym, sauna and Turkish bath.
