BH: The history of Clarins is closely related to spa activities. How did it start ?
Olivier Courtin-Clarins: Jacques, my father, created the company. Now, the third generation is getting ready to take over one day.
Actually, at the beginning, the activity mainly focused on health care and treatments provided in our Institute. The product sales started only 12 years later.
Another specific feature lied on our ability to listen and stay close to our clients. We have always responded to our customer needs with adapted products, away from marketing issues…
And our third strength is that 100% of our products derive from plants. I remember my father’s institute, when I was a little boy. It was a bit like his laboratory!
Prisca Courtin-Clarins: Nowadays, nothing has changed: quality products and treatments, laboratory research on the effects of treatments. Everything is carried out in France. We are proud of it.
BH: Tell us more about the Beauty Prescription…
Prisca Courtin-Clarins: As soon as you enter a Clarins Spa, you are our guest! They start by offering you a skin diagnosis done by our beauticians, then starts the completely hand-made treatment ritual. After that, we deliver a Beauty Prescription: a personalized sheet featuring the product names to guarantee the results, together with made-to-measure treatments. We are the only supplier of this specific care support. Newsletters are regularly sent to our clients. Not to mention the samples, Clarins is the only one to offer samples. We strongly believe in the saying: “Trying it is adopting it!”.
BH: How can a hotel open a Clarins Spa?
Prisca Courtin-Clarins: There are a number of precise criteria and technical specifications to fulfill: a design that needs to match the brand’s ethics, the location that has to be exceptional, a five-star hotel or resort… Talking about it, the St Regis Bora Bora Miri Miri Spa comes to my mind. Obviously, we are very strict with regards to training. Training includes a precise protocol and regular sessions. One can speak of a true partnership between the hotel and Clarins.
Olivier Courtin-Clarins: apart from hotels, we also open boutiques, store corners and Skin Spas in other prestigious locations, such as Department Stores in England.
BH: The travel industry fosters your development. What global trends do you see?
Olivier Courtin-Clarins: People who travel represent an important part of our clientele. They spend time in airports and are eager to indulge in treatments. They can find us in many airport lounge areas, such as Air France and buy our products duty-free. Duty-free sales are a real source of growth. We blend international prestige with French roots.
BH: Do you have any new projects?
Prisca Courtin-Clarins: My father created “Spa My Blend by Clarins”, our premium brand. Customized treatments and specific skin care products for every client, to experience the exception. Because every skin is unique. This concept is only to be found in very upscale locations and niches. The first spa to open was the Royal Monceau- Raffles in Paris. The next one is due to open in December, in Maldives, on Velaa Private Island. And we have just signed a partnership with Mandarin Oriental, for China.
